"The Plymouth Duster is Mopar's underappreciated mini muscle car" -Hagerty Media, October 2020
Hagerty went on to explain their view: "Mopar built some of the loudest, gaudiest, most cartoonish muscle cars of the '60s and '70s. They were perfect. You couldn't ask more from a muscle car. Consequently, muscle car fans have driven the prices for the hottest Mopars into the stratosphere. Plymouth 'Cudas and Road Runner can demand six figures when equipped with the right powertrain and color options. Plymouth Dusters, on the other hand, are still attainable, even when equipped with desirable powertrains. Sure, they didn't pack 440 or 426 power, but they also weighed less than the B-body Road Runner and Satellite and make an excellent platform for a street or strip car." As to the Duster 340, they added: "From 1970–73, the Duster 340 offered up a potent small-block package with the same high-revving power as the 'Cuda."
Offered here is a beautifully original and perfectly preserved, numbers-matching 1971 Plymouth Duster 340 in Butterscotch over black-vinyl-and-gray cloth. Showing just 26,475 miles on its odometer, the car is a respectfully treated, true survivor from California. It couldn't have looked any nicer when it was delivered to its first owner 50 years ago. Back then, the window sticker would've shown this equipment:
-340ci 4 BBL V8
-727 Torque Flight Automatic Transmission
-Butterscotch Paint Over Black/Gray Original Interior
- Factory Dual Chrome Exhaust Tips
-Rally Wheels
-Rally Dash with Factory Tach & 150 MPH Speedometer
The car's exterior Butterscotch paint is in exceptional condition and uniformly glossy across the entire car. The black vinyl roof is perfect. Body-panel alignment is excellent. A full "Duster 340" graphics and striping package in black-including the cartoon "Duster guy" rear-deck graphic-are perfectly applied. There is no mistaking this Duster for anything but the street-performance muscle car it is. The chrome trim, bumpers, grille, and badging on the car are original and in excellent condition; in the same way, cabin glass and lighting lenses are clear and undamaged. Dual exterior racing-style mirrors are mounted, as are original steel rally wheels (with brand new raised-white-letter BFGoodrich performance tires for a period-correct look) and chrome trim rings. Oval-shaped chrome dual-exhaust tips on the car are factory-original.
Inside, the car's original interior is in place. Front bucket seats and the rear bench seat are upholstered in black vinyl with gray fabric center inserts in outstanding original condition; there are no rips or tears. The factory dashboard with woodgrain trim remains in place. There have been no modifications to the performance gauges including the factory-original tachometer; the factory-installed Music Master AM radio also remains in place. Black factory carpeting covers the cabin floors, and the automatic- transmission shifter is mounted on the steering column.
Under the hood, the perfectly clean and orderly engine bay is a Mopar fan's visual delight: the 340 cubic-inch V8 with "4 Barrel"-labeled air cleaner and valve covers matching the engine-block color. (19A71 was the last year of production for the 340.) Auxiliary components are properly located; hoses and wiring is neatly routed. The car's original build tag remains in place. Viewed from below, the Duster's chassis is perfectly tidy; Stock headers, the full-length stock dual-exhaust system, fresh suspension components, and disc brakes all compete for attention here. There is no rust; all body panels are original.
This extremely original and perfectly preserved 1971 Plymouth Duster 340 is faithfully presented from every angle (including from below) in the more than 165 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available at the GarageKeptMotors site. That said, we always encourage in-person, up-close inspections by interested parties-or their representatives-at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. We ask only that advance appointments be made by phone or email so that we can devote our full attention to our visitors and this very special 340 Duster. In the same way, feel free to send questions our way via phone or email. Our showroom is not open to the public.
Unless this near-perfect '71 Duster 340 survivor ends up in a museum, the fortunate Mopar fan who acquires it is certain to spend almost as much time enjoying the street-performance aspects of the car as he or she does showing off its impressive details to fellow Mopar fans. Saturday-morning cars-and-coffee gatherings ought to be a blast. (Remember to make an
