MacGregor is a "trailer sailor" a sailboat with an outboard motor that can be cheaply stored on a trailer. This is a motor sailor, you have redundant propulsion sail and motor so it is great safe boat for beginners. Easy to master for beginners, cheap to store and value will not deprecate. Coastal winds are often unpredictable and inconsistent wind makes slow sailing for traditional sailboats. This is a problem for weekend sailors who cannot miss work on Monday and Tuesday because they are stuck at Catalina.
A 50 HP outboard gives you great speed if you need to escape pirate capture or return to shore in an emergency (no running out of beer does not qualify as an emergency) you can just start the motor and quickly get there.
