Louis Oscar Roty’s famous La Semeuse (The Sower) shows Marianne, the national symbol of France, in a striding position, moving toward a brighter future. Designed in 1896, The Sower remained a constant design on French coinage throughout and beyond much of the century that followed its introduction, through wars, new governments and even a new currency (the euro) that debuted in 2002. The influence on America's Walking Liberty half dollar is immediately noticeable.
Marianne, the Sower, is forever linked to the French people and the coins of France.
In 2022, the Sower features the second part of Monnaie de Paris' hommage to the 20th anniversary of euro, by celebrating the 20th anniversary of the introduction of the euro currency.
The obverse shows the French franc symbol accompanied by an olive branch. On the right-hand side, the Euro symbol encircles Joaquin Jiménez's "Tree of Life“, designed in 1997.
The reverse is identical to the 2021 Sower collection, paying a first tribute to the European currecy, and features Oscar Roty's original Sower, sowing 20 stars in the furrows of the French flag. The portrait in the foreground shows the woman who inspired the engraver in 1896, Rosalinda Pesce.
