HOLLAND & GREEN ANTIQUE WHITE IRONSTONE TUREEN WITH PINECONE OR THISTLE FINIAL

Description

This exceptional antique covered tureen was made by Holland & Green.  This is a maker's mark I have not often encountered.  Elisha Holland & John Green were in business between the years 1861 - 1881, taking over the business of C.&. W.K. Harvey at Stoke-On-Trent in England.  I love the cover on this tureen with its generous finial.  At first I thought the finial was in the form of a pine cone, but when I saw the leaves surrounding it, I realized it is actually a thistle flower at its budding stage.  With all of its molded details, it is a very decorative tureen, and in excellent condition.  The only flaws I can find are a minuscule bubble on the outer edge of the cover and a very tiny and slight glaze nick on the under side of the cover.  These will be clearly photographed.  The black transfer mark on the base is of a lion and unicorn flanking a coat of arms type shield with a crown atop and banners below.  The words read Ironstone Holland & Wood.  From the tip of the handle to tip of the handle this antique white ironstone tureen measures approx. 13 1/2" across.  The height to the top of the finial is approx. 7".   It is a sturdy yet beautiful antique tureen, perfect for display as well as for use.
